Forty years ago, I was told by someone in Southampton that a non- white person would never get selected let alone win a parliamentary seat on the south coast.
I’m delighted and glowing with pride that Satvir Kaur has been selected as the Labour’s candidate to fight the Test constituency at the general election. How wrong they were! I’m not sure if I should ask them to eat humble pie now or wait for Satvir to be elected!
Satvir has been a hard working councillor for over a decade never shying away from issues such as supporting refugees, standing up to racism and championing anti-racism initiatives in the city (click here for a feature interview).
She follows in the footsteps of all of us who campaigned against racism in all its manifestations, exposing and taking on institutional racism and dismantling barriers in the process. There’s a long way to go but the chickens are coming home to roost!
I wholeheartedly endorse her to be our MP for the Test Constituency.
