Collect free seeds from CommuniBakes to help fundraise for Southampton charity

Southampton gardeners are being invited to collect free seeds from a community bakery in the city to grow plants for a charity Spring Plant Sale next month.

CommuniBakes in Shirley, which is the venue for the event on May 10, is offering people complimentary packets of seeds to grow for the fundraiser in aid of Communicare.

Amanda Worton-Griffiths, Manager at CommuniBakes, which is at 21, St James Road, says: “We’re delighted to be once again this year hosting an annual Spring Plant Sale for the charity Communicare in our backyard. To give people an incentive to sow and grow plants for the charity, which is working to eradicate loneliness in the city, we’re offering a selection of free seeds. People can come and collect packets from us while stocks last and donate some of the plants they grow for the charity to sell in May.”

CommuniBakes is a commercial enterprise that supports Communicare financially. All the money raised from the event will go towards helping with the charity’s work with vulnerable and isolated people in Southampton.

The organisation’s Fundraising and Finance Coordinator, Emily Arbery, explains: “We’re delighted to be holding our fourth annual Spring Plant Sale at CommuniBakes from 10am until 12pm on Saturday, May 10.

“Lots of plants will be available on the day for people to buy to help fundraise for us, but we also still need more gardeners to donate plants for us to sell at the event, so if anyone can sow, and grow on, a few seeds for us, that’d be great. Plant donations can be dropped at CommuniBakes on the day of the event from 8.30am.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing what people kindly bring along for us to sell and to meeting everyone who comes along to buy as well.

“The economic climate currently means we need financial support from fundraising events like this now more than ever. Every penny we receive is put to good use making someone’s life better.”

Communicare is a friendly, neighbourhood charity, which provides services that enrich the lives of isolated people in and around Southampton.

The charity’s Manager, Annie Clewlow explains: “There has been lots of research showing how loneliness impacts on both someone’s physical and mental well-being, so we’re here to help all ages live their best lives, rather than to just exist.”

The charity is currently supporting more than 750 individuals/families through tasks including, befriending, transport for appointments and assistance with shopping and always needs more donations and volunteers to help with its work.

The services it provides are free to users, although beneficiaries are invited to donate if they can, and Communiteers are offered expenses.

Amanda adds: “Here at CommuniBakes we support Communicare’s work; all our profits are donated to the charity, so you can enjoy a cake, or take home a loaf, and know you’re helping people living nearby at the same time. You can now pre-order your bread online from us to collect on the day too.”

Communicare’s Spring Plant Sale at CommuniBakes, 21, St James Road, Shirley, Southampton, is on Saturday, May 10 from 10am until 12pm.

Seeds can be collected from the Bakery during April, while stocks last. Plant donations should only be dropped at the bakery from 8.30am on the day of the event.
