Theatre Royal Winchester is pleased to announce it will be hosting classic movies on its big screen from early May.
The series of films features a range of golden oldies and contemporary favourites – Singin’ in the Rain, Dirty Dancing, Some Like It Hot, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Matilda and Roman Holiday – with Hollywood royalty including Gene Kelly, Patrick Swayze, Marilyn Monroe, Harrison Ford, Danny DeVito, Audrey Hepburn and more gracing the screen.
The theatre, which began life hosting silent movies in the 1910s and became a cinema in the 1920s, was able to start offering cinema-style screenings again in summer 2021 with the installation of a brand-new cinema screen, laser projector, streaming equipment and surround sound system.
Since then, the venue has hosted a number of screenings of award-winning and star-studded National Theatre Live stage productions – but these additional movie screenings are a new offer from the city-based venue.
The work that enabled the theatre to screen films was funded by the Garfield Weston Foundation, which awarded money to Play to the Crowd – the charity that runs the theatre – to help the venue continue to improve and extend its offer, accessibility and audience experience.
Singin’ in the Rain will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 6 May at 2pm; Dirty Dancing on Wednesday 4 June at 7.30pm; Some Like It Hot on Thursday 17 July at 11am; Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope on Wednesday 17 September at 7.30pm; Matilda on Thursday 30 October at 1.30pm; and Roman Holiday on Thursday 13 November at 11am.
Tickets cost £12 (£10 concessions) and are available from the Box Office at the theatre on Jewry Street, For more information or to book tickets visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
