Southampton gig guide – April

Southampton gig guide – April

By Vicky Greer

The sun is out, the people of Southampton are venturing outside again, and we’ve got a stacked line-up of live entertainment coming to the city. I don’t care if I’m getting ahead of myself – summer has arrived, basically. This April, we’ve got some of the most fresh and exciting names spanning rock, pop and drag taking to the stages across the city. Buckle up, grab some tickets, and have fun.

Thursday 3rd – Geordie Greep, The 1865

Geordie Greep was already turning heads as part of experimental rock band Black Midi, but it was his debut solo album in the aftermath of the band’s indefinite hiatus that solidified him as a modern great. His mind-boggling jazz fusion rock pulls inspiration from almost every nook and cranny of musical history, creating dazzling music that feels timeless beyond the artist’s 25 years. As someone who witnessed the sensory overwhelm of a 2 AM Black Midi festival set, trust me when I say you should see this.

Wednesday 9th – Caity Baser, Joiners

Local hero Caity Baser (pis playing another homecoming show in our fair city this month, but this time with a twist. Exactly one year to the day since her triumphant headline set at the O2 Guildhall, this time, she’s shaking things up with an intimate piano show at the Joiners, offering local fans an exclusive first listen of her new music. A joyful new voice who’s making pop music more fun than ever before, Caity is a must-see performer.

It’s sold out, but keep an eye out here.

Saturday 12th – Black Country, New Road – Engine Rooms

Black Country, New Road are one of the most unique, fascinating groups on the scene right now. They often get the post-punk label thrown at them, but that doesn’t even begin to cover their boundary-destroying performances that change and transform with every new chapter they embark on. The Mercury-nominated band will come to Engine Rooms this month to celebrate their new album, Forever Howlong. Expect a plethora of instruments on stage and a genre-defying live experience.

Wednesday 16th – Lawrence Chaney, The 1865

It feels like a while since we’ve had a big drag show in Southampton, but this month we’re welcoming Drag Race UK winner Lawrence Chaney to the stage at The 1865 with her one-woman show, Memoirs from My Sh*gpipes. Yes, it’s more stand-up and less gig, but since I’m once again binging Drag Race, I felt it needed a mention.

Monday 21st – ALT BLK ERA – Heartbreakers

Another waitlist show here, I’m afraid, as we bring the month to a close with one of the most promising new rock bands on the scene today. Fresh from releasing their debut album, ALT BLK ERA come to Heartbreakers on the 21st to blow the roof off the venue with their genre-mixing combination of synth pop, alt rock, drum n bass, and more. If you’re into the pure chaos of WARGASM, Delilah Bon or Nova Twins, this is a band to keep an eye on.
