What’s Coming Up In February At October Books?

By Laura McCarthy.

Southampton’s beloved independent bookshop October Books will be hosting a variety of exciting events for lovers of reading, writing, and even cooking this February.

Things get underway half way through the month, when they will be holding a poetry fundraiser on Saturday 15th February from 2.30pm until 5pm. October Books aim to ‘help our community owned bookshop through hard times’ by raising money through a full afternoon of poetry from local poets. You can even get involved yourself as a local writer (see information in linked event). Guests are welcome to come at any time and leave when they like – or stay for the whole afternoon! Tickets are £5 and all for a good cause.

If that’s not enough poetry for you, the shop will once again have their open mic poetry night on Friday February 21st  from 6.45pm until 9pm. You are welcome to sign up to perform when you arrive or you  can choose to listen to the work of other poets. I have attended the night before and found it to be a valuable experience.

For more details, you can read my article on this experience: in-common.co.uk/2024/10/06/review-october-books-open-mic-poetry/

Tickets cost £5 and the event can be found here: octoberbooks.lemonbooking.com/events/80/details

For some variety, October Books are in the works of making another cooking event happen. This is looking to be happening on the 22nd with more details set to come. This will be a curry making night.

Finally, you can get involved in their writing as spiritual practise workshops. Delve into the craft of language with a community to share thoughts and ideas with. In February, these will be taking place on the 11th and the 25th from 10am. If you miss out, there will also other opportunities to attend in March and April. Tickets start at £8.83 for a single booking.
