Last week (8/11/24) constituents came together with Satvir Kaur MP in St Denys as part of the National Day of Action, to call for more action for people, climate and nature.
Greenpeace Southampton Coordinators Lyn Brayshaw and Rosanna Newey lead a Q&A roundtable discussion at St Denys Community Centre with the Southampton Test MP, where the 16 constituent attendees were able to ask questions related to the climate emergency.
The activity is part of the Common Grounds Campaign, led by The Climate Coalition. Nearly 300 people, across all four nations of the UK, pledged to meet with their MP as part of this campaign.
A Greenpeace Southampton spokesperson said: “In the July election, more than 70% of people said they would vote with climate and nature in mind, and at least 243 seats flipped to parties which were standing on stronger climate and nature platforms, demonstrating the strength of feeling among the UK public for greater action on the climate and nature crises.”
Southampton Greenpeace volunteers are calling on Satvir Kaur MP, to champion and support local and national climate action and to push the UK Government to play a climate leadership role on the international stage.
Christabel, from Freemantle said: “I care about the climate crisis because I want a livable future for my son, free from natural disasters, conflicts and lack of food/water. By meeting with my MP I hope that she will consider my son and all children’s futures when she makes decisions about tackling the climate emergency.”
Greenpeace UK is calling for the new government to prioritise 6 key areas to tackle the climate and nature crises and the cost of living crisis.
Wind power – Power the UK with affordable home-grown renewable energy
Wheels – Roll-out cheaper and better buses and trains for healthier air
Wildlife – Stop sewage and chemicals polluting our rivers and seas, prevent overfishing and industrial farming and rewild our countryside
Workers – Make the economy work for everyone, clean up the banks and support workers into jobs in the industries of the future
World – Protect our oceans and cut plastic, protect our democracy and human rights, and stop new drilling for oil and gas and tax big oil companies to support people facing the worst climate impacts.
