Comedy fans and supporters of the local arts scene are invited to celebrate the work of the University of Winchester alumni who star in Biscuit Barrel: The 69 Sketch Show, which will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 25 September.
This one-off performance of The 69 Sketch Show will be a special extended version of the Biscuit Barrel troupe’s sell-out Edinburgh Fringe show as they return home to perform 85 sketches in one evening – as part of Winchester Comedy Festival.
The troupe’s trademark is rapid-fire sketches – with The 69 Sketch Show featuring a mix of absurd characters, slapstick, and wordplay at break-neck speed. The show includes sketches about enraged self-checkout machines and slapstick routines told though beatbox.
The Biscuit Barrel troupe was founded at the University of Winchester in 2016 by James Horscroft as part of a drama project while he was studying there and it has been going ever since – with the troupe building a reputation on the comedy circuit and being described as ‘the most reliable sketch group in the game’ by Ed Fringe Review. The troupe still includes a number of the university’s alumni – group leader Horscroft, songwriter Capriella Monique, and co-writer Daryl Reader (or Dazz Reviews on Youtube – with over 500,000 subscribers and millions of views), plus others.
The troupe returns to Winchester after performing their new show, featuring69 sketches in 60 minutes, to audiences at this summer’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, at the city’s Gilded Balloon – one of the Fringe’s top venues – where the troupe also performed last year, drawing in massive audiences and enjoying rave reviews.
Following the performance at the theatre, there will be a post-show Q&A for theatre makers and students who want to find out more about getting their work on the festival circuit.
