God’s House Tower – the historic gateway into Southampton’s Old Town – has announced a packed calendar of events for its grand opening season. Travel back through 700 years of medieval history, from its creation as a gun tower and strategic point of defence to its days as one of England’s most eerie gaols. Each floor takes you on a journey in time with the Stories Behind the Stones, told with multimedia installations and fascinating displays – topped with rooftop views across Southampton.
The weekend of 15, 16 and 17 November offers a selection of free entertainment to celebrate the building being gifted back to the people of Southampton. Saturday sees a sing-a-long with the Black Heritage Association Choir and a traditional dragon dance performance from Southampton Chinese Association and Sunday provides a live showcase of classical Indian and Bollywood dance from Art Asia before a blockbuster screening of Jaws.
The weekend will also include an art display inspired by the sights and sounds of passing container ships viewed from the roof of the Tower, a woollen version of Southampton’s medieval walls knitted in an ongoing project and a Building Bridges session, inspired by God’s House Tower’s Beside the Sea and the monument’s lost connection to the water.
