Folk music fans are in for a treat when Steeleye Span return to the city and Theatre Royal Winchester on Saturday 18 May.
The British folk-rock band will be celebrating 50 years together and a new album, The Green Man Collection, which features tracks from recent releases and new versions of three classics including a reworking of Hard Times with Status Quo’s Francis Rossi, a cover of Elvis Costello’s Shipbuilding and a previously lost song by band member, Bob Johnson.
Steeleye Span are known as one of the most influential names in British roots music for taking the music out of small clubs and around the world, winning awards and becoming an institution in British music. The band formed in 1969 with their goal being to play folk music in a contemporary, electric band format.
For this UK tour, they will be joined by new violinist, Athena Octavia, who has done it all – from giving classical recitals to improvising at beach clubs to performing with the likes of Ed Sheeran at the BRIT awards.
An evening featuring a selection of songs from the band’s many decades together, plus fan favourites, it promises to be a delight for all Steeleye Span fans.
