Preview: RUSH – A Joyous Jamaican Journey, MAST Mayflower Theatre, Southampton

The Rush Theatre Company is delighted to be opening the 2024 tour of their critically acclaimed production, RUSH – A Joyous Jamaican Journey, in Southampton next month.

They are thrilled to be returning to MAST Mayflower Studios on Saturday 24 February, telling the important story of the heroic Windrush Generation and the contribution the Reggae genre had worldwide.

In 1948, hundreds of people from the Caribbean boarded the Empire Windrush and travelled to Tilbury Docks in Essex. With them they brought an explosion of dance, art, writing and music which would transform British culture.

After WWII, large parts of Britain were in desperate need of rebuilding, so the UK actively invited immigration from Commonwealth nations. There was no shortage of jobs in industries such as National Rail, the NHS and public transport.

The show takes the audience on a journey covering the history of Jamaica, slavery and the Commonwealth through to the racism faced by the ‘Windrush Generation’ when they arrived in what they believed to be their Motherland.

Narrated and written by John Simmit, the show features ska, rocksteady, calypso, gospel lovers rock and dancehall played live by the JA Reggae Band.  Get ready to embrace and enjoy the music of Reggae legends Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, Millie Small and many more.

Tickets for RUSH – A Joyous Jamaican Journey (24 February) are on sale at mayflowerstudios.org.uk or 02380 711811.
