Theatre Royal Winchester has programmed another three National Theatre Live screenings of theatre productions featuring well-known actors, by critically acclaimed and award-winning playwrights and directors, and captured live on stages across London.
On Friday 12 January, Skylight opens on schoolteacher Kyra Hollis receiving an unexpected visit from her former lover, Tom Sergeant – a successful and charismatic restauranteur.
As sparks fly, they rekindle their romance, but while their passion may once have been enough, the pair must now overcome conflicts of opinion.
Starring Bill Nighy (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Carey Mulligan (Suffragette) and Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game), Skylight is by the award-winning playwright David Hare and directed by Stephen Daldry, known for Billy Elliot, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and The Crown.
Next, on Thursday 25 January, Dear England follows Gareth Southgate from his missed penalty at the 1996 Euro semi-finals to his role as caretaker manager of the England football team and finally, manager, selecting his squad and seeing them develop.
As a gripping examination of nation and the beautiful game, with Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Gareth Southgate, Dear England is a new play by James Graham (Best of Enemies, Quiz, Brexit: The Uncivil War)and directed by Rupert Goold whose credits include stage productions of America Psycho, Made in Dagenham and Richard III.
On Saturday 9 March, Vanya explores the complexities of human emotions with hopes, dreams and regrets forced into sharp focus.
This one-man adaptation features Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Fleabag) playing multiple roles and is by playwright Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time). His radical new version of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya is directed by Sam Yates (Glengarry Glen Ross, East is East).
Last year the theatre announced it would host screenings of filmed performances of National Theatre productions filmed across London’s West End. The screenings are possible following the installation of a laser projector, cinema screen, live streaming equipment and surround sound system in summer 2021.
Play to the Crowd, the charity that runs the theatre, was able to complete this project thanks to a generous grant by the Garfield Weston Foundation, which awarded the charity money to help it continue to improve and extend its offer, accessibility and audience experience.
