October is Black History Month. The theme for this year is ‘heritage’.
This year’s Black History Month launched in Southampton with a special event at St Mary’s Fire Station.
A spokesperson said: “Through the lens of heritage we will explore the cultural legacies that have shaped the influence Black communities have had on world events throughout history.”
The month gets underway in style, with a brand new festival in and around Guildhall Square on October 1st.

On Sunday there will also be a commemoration parade to remember black soldiers who have lost their lives in conflict.
Sunday, October 7 sees the launch of the Fetissoes exhibition at God’s House Tower. The exhibition is a major new commission by Glasgow-based multidisciplinary artist Kialy Tihngang. The exhibition consists of wearable sculptures and a video installation and runs from October 6th to November 26th.
Other events include Saluting our Sisters at Southampton Central Library on October 12th. This free event will explore stories honouring the significant achievements of women of colour that have often been overlooked but are now being celebrated.
Singer-songwriter, producer and pianist reuben James will showcase virtuoso jazz techniques and soulful vocals at Turner Sims on October 26th.
