Independent Venues Week got underway yesterday (January 30). As the name rather strongly suggests, it’s a week-long celebration of independent music and arts venues, and the people who own, run and work in them. Venues in and around Southampton taking part include The Joiners, Heartbreakers, The Railway Inn in Winchester, Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea. The are some great events on so do look out for them in the listings.
But, of course, we at In Common and Shop Local Southampton always strive to support independent local venues – it’s what Shop Local Southampton exists for – so every week is a celebration of independent local businesses, and the extensive weekly listings guide is a great way of finding out what’s on at a local business, from arts and crafts to international rock stars.
Among the highlights this week are Southampton’s very own international superstars Band of Skulls at The Joiners on Saturday, Kula Shaker at The Engine Rooms, also on Saturday, The Ocean at The 1865 (read more here), concert pianist Luka Okros at Turner Sims (click here for more information) and JW Francis at Vinilo on Monday (click here to read more).
On stage, Swan Lake is at The Mayflower, Sherlock Holmes: The Valley of Fear is at MAST Mayflower Studios (click here for a preview), there’s a National Theatre Live screening of The Crucible at Theatre Royal Winchester (click here for more details), MAD(E) at MAST Mayflower Studios (click here for more)
With school teachers, university and college lecturers, firefighters, security guards, railway workers, civil servants and train drivers and more amongst the 100,000s of workers on strike on Wednesday, there’s a rally for striking workers and supporters in Southampton (click here for more information).
