Hundreds take to Southampton streets for protest in support of trans rights

By Sally Churchward.

Some 300 to 500 trans people and allies marched through the centre of Southampton today (26/4/25) before rallying at Watts Park for a rally in support of the transgender community.

The event was organised by Trans Pride Southampton following not only the recent Supreme Court ruling that a transgender woman is not a woman, as defined under the Equality Act 2010 regarding sex discrimination.

Trans Pride Southampton asserts that harm to trans women, affects all women. It is inevitable that cisgender women, if they were to be mistaken as trans, will also face this same humiliation – and in the instance of only being strip searched by a male, a potentially traumatic fate that we have seen in the media since the court ruling.

The peaceful protest saw the Southampton community come together in solidarity with trans people, and was cheered by passers by and those who work in the city.

Chants such as ‘trans rights are under attack, what do we do? fight back,’ ‘say it loud, say it clear, trans people welcome here’ and some that were less than favourable about the prime minister rang out across the crowd.

Further report and photos from the event to follow.
