On Saturday 12 April, the first ever Trans Pride Basingstoke is to take place in the heart of the town.

This is a grassroots event, organised by Hampshire Trans+ Network. The event starts with a protest march through the town, starting outside Halifax on Wote Street; the march will then proceed to the War Memorial Park for a community picnic. The event is expected to last from 1pm (the start of the march through town) to end at approximately 5pm.

This event is a space for the local trans+ community to come together, in mutual aid and solidarity.

“Trans pride Basingstoke is a response to the rampant anti-trans+ hatred, bigotry and violence occurring in the UK,” explained Hampshire Trans+ Network.

“Unfortunately Hampshire isn’t always the safest county for trans+ people and therefore providing a space that acts as an outlet for our communities’ shared solidarity, love and rage is super important.“

Hampshire Trans+ Network is a relatively new organisation in Hampshire for the trans+ community.

“Hampshire Trans+ Network is an activist and community organisation started by young trans people from the county,” they added, on their plans for the future. “Our first project: Trans Pride Winchester, proved a big success and we are excited to return for a larger, arts and performance focused event later in the year as well as many other activist projects.

“As an organisation we have many future plans.

“We are opening a pop up weekly community centre under the name ‘Hampshire Queer Solidarity Centre’ in May which we hope will provide an excellent source of support for the local queer community as well as any others who may seek it. We will be providing our clothes swap facilities, arts activities, a collection of zines and books, a space to seek support and free community food.

“We also hope to begin monthly demos around different towns in the county and of course we have Trans Pride Winchester in September. We are very pro supporting other activist causes and wish to work closely with other groups shown through our current work within the Palestinian liberation movement. “
