Local young people are invited to audition for a professionally-led musical production of the all-time classic, Annie – that will be performed at Theatre Royal Winchester this summer.
Annie is the story of a little orphan girl living in 1930s New York, determined to find the parents who abandoned her on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage run by the cruel and embittered Miss Hannigan. Annie has had a next-to-nothing start in life but her positivity helps her charm her way into people’s hearts, and with the help of the other girls in the orphanage, she is able to escape to find a new home.
The auditions will be held at Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 6 May, 5.30pm – 6.30pm (for young people 7-12 years old) and 6.30pm – 7.30pm (13-21 years old); and Sunday 11 May, 10am – 11am (7-12 years old) and 11am – 12pm midday (13-21 years old). Auditionees only need to attend one audition; they must be at least 8 years old by the time of the shows, which will be performed from Thursday 31 July to Saturday 2 August.
The auditions are free to attend and there is no need for auditionees to book on a time slot – they can simply turn up within their allocated time slot, sign in and audition! Auditionees do not need to prepare anything either – all materials are provided and taught on the day. Auditionees will go into the audition in a group of 15-20 people of their similar age group, with the audition lasting 20 to 30 minutes during which auditionees will be taught a short excerpt from a song, a short movement routine and be asked to read from a script.
Parents are not allowed in the audition room but are asked to stay to supervise their young people before and after the audition. All auditionees will receive a letter within two weeks of the second audition date, whether they have been successful or not.
The production and direction of Annie will be led by Rare Productions – a youth musical theatre company that provides opportunities for young people aged 8-21 years to perform in full-scale musical productions in professional theatres across the UK – with an emphasis on teamwork, fun and friendships, while learning new skills and performance techniques.
Successful auditionees must be available for the entire rehearsal period (dates TBC) and the performances at the theatre from Thursday 31 July to Saturday 2 August 2025.
For more information including the fees applied if offered a role in the production, auditionees and their families can visit the Playmakers news page.
