By Southampton Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
On Friday 21st March concerned people from many different backgrounds held an Emergency Vigil in Southampton outside the Civic Centre. This was to protest against Israel breaking the terms of the ceasefire and refusing to move to Stage 2 of the agreed ceasefire deal. Instead Israel restarted its onslaught and bombing of innocent civilians – many of whom are women and children – in Gaza. The UN Commission previously found war crimes and crimes against humanity in Israeli attacks on Gaza’s health facilities and treatment of detainees and hostages.
Moving to Stage 2 would have meant the release of more of the small number of Israeli hostages, and Israel releasing some of the many thousands of Palestinian hostages it also holds. In addition to Israel accepting a permanent ceasefire. However, it seemed Israel did not want a permanent ceasefire, but to continued with its bombing and the forced ethnic cleansing and removal of the people of Palestine from Gaza, and so it did not go to Stage 2. And, this is after also starving the people of Palestine by illegally refusing to let supplies in.
There would have been many many more at the vigil, but PSC Southampton called it at short notice due to the resumption of the massacre of the people in Gaza. It was also to protest against our Government continuing to support Israel by supplying arms to Israel and by running spy flights over Gaza.
