Preview: The Fureys, Theatre Royal Winchester

Fans of Irish music are invited to a celebratory knees-up at Theatre Royal Winchester when the band, The Fureys, takes to the stage on Saturday 5 April – with their last ever concert in the city as they look forward to retirement.

The Fureys are one of Ireland’s most acclaimed and influential middle of the road, folk and traditional bands – with a career dating back to the 60s when brothers Eddie and Finbar Furey left home to travel to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival.

Soon housemates with several unknown folk singers including Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty, they were special guests for Irish folk band, The Clancy Brothers, on tour in the USA and Canada, before touring Europe in the 1970s and enjoying UK chart success and bringing Irish folk and traditional music to the masses in the 80s.

Lovers of spontaneous jam sessions, they could be found playing music with the likes of Irish music stars, Joe Dolan, Philomena Begley and the Chieftains, with others praising the brothers for their musical influence – Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics credits Eddie with teaching him his first chords on the guitar!

Now, The Fureys – well known for such songs as When You Were Sweet 16, The Green Fields of France, Red Rose Café, From Clare to Here and many more – are with us for their final concert in Winchester and – as it is said about any other Fureys concert – this will be a night to remember and cherish.

The Fureys will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Saturday 5 April at 7.30pm. For more information or to book tickets visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
