Writers and directors wanted for new project

Local writers and directors looking for others to discuss creative ideas with and work together are invited to apply for a ‘speed-dating’ evening at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 9 April.

The Unwritten: Creative Speed Dating Evening, which will see writers and directors pitching ideas, showcasing their work and forming working partnerships, is the first stage of the Unwritten artist development programme designed to showcase local emerging voices in theatre.

At the end of the evening, eight partnerships will have formed and each writer will go onto devise an original monologue or duologue with their assigned director working with them to help bring their script to life for the Unwritten: Scratch Night at the theatre on Friday 13 June.

The scratch event will feature eight short performances and one will be selected as the winner with the writer and director receiving rehearsal space and further support to help develop their work – to perform at the Unwritten: Showcase at the theatre on Friday 29 August.

Writers and directors of all experience levels are welcome to apply to take part in Unwritten – an artist development programme devised by Playmakers – the creative learning and community engagement work of the arts and education charity, Play to the Crowd – who also run Theatre Royal Winchester and Hat Fair. Unwritten reflects the charity’s ongoing commitment to nurturing talent.

The closing date to apply to take part in the Unwritten: Creative Speed Dating Evening – the first stage of the project, where the writers and directors will first meet – is Tuesday 1 April. For more information and the online application form, visit theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk. Applicants should note that this is an unpaid opportunity.

Playmakers’ Engagement Producer, Hannah Jones, said: “We are thrilled to offer such an exciting opportunity for directors and writers to showcase their work at our Unwritten Scratch Night, part of our Artist Development Programme.

“It’s always inspiring to see new collaborations and ideas take shape. These collaborations will undoubtedly lead to some truly exciting results and I’m looking forward to celebrating all the incredible work that emerges.”
