Preview: Die Fledermaus, Theatre Royal Winchester

Seasoned opera lovers and newcomers to the genre can delight in the witty Die Fledermaus, which comes to Theatre Royal Winchester on Sunday 9 March.

Die Fledermaus is an operetta by Johann Strauss and tells a witty story of mischief and misidentification.

This adaptation, translated into English, is brought to the stage by the company Merry Opera who, in 2007, set out to show audiences that they might learn to love opera when sung in a language they understand.

Now, the company – whose past productions include adaptations of The Mikado, Don Giovanni and La Boheme and have been enjoyed by over 67,000 people – perform across the country, in cities, town, villages and sometimes even churches, to audiences who, they say, ‘don’t need to pay a fortune or wear formal evening dress’ to watch and enjoy their shows.

The production is directed by Guido Martin-Brandis who formed The Opera Company in 2017 and whose shows receive five-star reviews and award nominations. He has worked with Guildhall School of Music and Drama and directed operas performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Camden Fringe.

Die Fledermaus promises a night of unforgettable melodies and cheeky capers for opera audiences and those who want to experience something new!

There will be two performances on the day including a relaxed performance specially designed to provide a supportive environment for children and adults with additional needs.

Die Fledermaus will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Sunday 09 March at 3pm and 7.30pm. For more information or to book tickets visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
