October Books to hold Valentine’s poetry fundraiser

Southampton’s only community-owned bookshop makes an urgent appeal for support this Valentine’s: October Books Poetry Fundraiser.

Amid the chaos of everyday life, creating and nurturing creative, safe spaces in our city has never been more essential. This Valentine’s weekend, make a meaningful impact by joining Southampton’s October Books for an afternoon of poetry on Saturday, February 15th. With a donation of just £5, you can help support the beloved community-owned bookshop through challenging times.

The team at October Books comprises dedicated individuals committed to fostering community engagement and promoting social change. The continual passion from staff, members and volunteers has made the shop a beloved space in our city. In 2018, the community came together to help the shop move to its current location by forming a viral human chain to transfer books.

Writer Liz Amos will be hosting the event alongside long-serving October Books team member, Amelia. Liz is known for her debut novel, All the Truths Between Us, which was longlisted for the SI Leeds Literary Prize in 2022.

Speaking on her passion for the event, Liz says, A brilliant mix of poets have signed up—young people and adults, experienced performers and those sharing for the first time. It’s a great reminder of what October Books aims to be: an inclusive space for our city, where all kinds of stories are welcome.”

Want to take the floor and share your poetry? We’d love to hear from you! Contact Liz at liz@liz-amos.com to sign up for a reading.
