Fans of the author Thomas Hardy will enjoy an adaptation of the classic, Far from the Madding Crowd, coming to Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 February.
Set against the rural landscape of Victorian England, Far from the Madding Crowd tells the story of the beautiful and independent, Bathsheba Everdene, who inherits and manages her uncle’s farm and is courted by three suitors – an honest and loyal shepherd, a charming but womanising sergeant, and a lonely, wealthy farmer.
Who will she choose?
A story of love, class and gender roles, she plays with the men’s hearts to devastating and dramatic effect.
Far from the Madding Crowd is brought to the stage by Conn Artists Theatre Company – a company in residence at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing creating productions that showcase stories that resonate with themes about the human condition, and have a genuine social impact. The company reimagine or adapt literary and poetic classics or neglected works.
The story has been adapted by Nick Young and company founder, Ross Muir, and is performed by an ensemble cast and accompanied by music and songs of the period. It is presented in association with the charity that runs Theatre Royal Winchester – Play to the Crowd.
