By Trans Pride Southampton.
We at Trans Pride Southampton are appalled to hear of the banning of puberty blockers for trans youths.
Puberty blockers are a life saving treatment for trans kids. They allow children to live their lives and figure out their identity without the pressure of their natal puberty masculinising or feminising their bodies irreversibly.
MPs are already hearing of young trans people who are harming themselves now they are left with no medical treatment to help their distress – including a trans boy starving themselves to prevent periods or their breasts growing.
Puberty blockers treatment is completely reversible, by ceasing medication (if a gender questioning child realises they are not trans or want their natal puberty to resume), or instead by a young trans person starting cross-sex hormones to commence the puberty of the sex their identify as. However, the damage this government is causing is irreversible and will hurt a whole generation of trans people.
We hope this lets all our trans supporters, and allies (both queer and otherwise) see that the fight for trans rights and equality is far from over.
