Transgender Day of Remembrance takes place next week

By Mabel Wellman.

On the 20th November, it is Transgender Day Of Remembrance (TDOR).

This is an extremely tough time for trans people. Across the world there will be candlelight vigils and services to mourn the lives lost to anti-transgender violence. A common tradition of these services is to read the names of the transgender people who have been killed in the past year.

In Southampton, our annual observance will take place at the Queens Peace Fountain in East Park (address on Google Maps is 10 Brunswick Pl, Southampton SO14 7DW). The reading of the names will begin at approximately 6pm. The event hosts, Trans Pride Southampton, encourage anyone in the local community to peacefully take part in this observance, and be there for their trans friends and family,  by joining the community in quiet reflection whilst the names are read out. Visitors are encouraged to bring candles to light.

Due to being an outdoor event, visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately for cold and wet weather, bring water, and plan ahead with regards to finding a suitable toilet to use at the time the event takes place.
