Theatre fans can enjoy the story of a young bride-to-be who falls in love with a soldier clutching chocolate creams when Arms and the Man visits Theatre Royal Winchester from Tuesday 12 November.

Arms and the Man (or The Chocolate Cream Soldier) tells of a beautiful, young Bulgarian woman, Raina, who has heroic ideals, engaged as she is to Major Sergius Saranoff, who is fighting in the war against Serbia with her father, Major Petkoff.

But, when escaping Serbian, Captain Bluntschi, climbs through her bedroom window with a pocket of chocolate creams, she hides him away – and when she catches her fiancé flirting with her maid, Louka, Raina doubts what she thought she knew about love and war as true love takes its place.

Arms and the Manis a comedy written by the Irish playwright, George Bernard Shaw, who wrote more than 60 plays during his life including Pygmalion, which was later adapted into the famous musical, My Fair Lady, starring Audrey Hepburn. This production of Arms and the Man is dedicated to the memory of Michael Friend – a leading producer of Bernard Shaw’s work, and enthusiast.

It is brought to the stage by touring theatre company, Rumpus Theatre Company, whose previous productions include an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart – in association with The Sarah Thorne Theatre, Broadstairs – a small scale venue, which during the week holds adult education classes.
