Preview: Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers: In Time 30th Anniversary Tour, Theatre Royal Winchester

Audiences familiar with the performing art of taiko drumming will welcome the return of the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers with their 30th Anniversary Tour show at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 23 October.

The Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers – who are celebrating their first major UK tour in five years – will take the audience on a journey through three decades of performance as part of a full theatrical experience featuring heart-pounding rhythms, atmospheric soundscapes and dynamic choreography – showcasing the group’s enduring skill, stamina and soul.

Mugenkyo are the UK’s longest-established taiko group and Europe’s only professional touring company of this energetic performing art – with over 1,000 performances around the world, to their name – including in the UK, Japan and Europe.

The group was established in 1994 and since becoming the most influential taiko organisation in the UK, they have performed at the likes of London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and Brighton Theatre Royal, at a number of music festivals; and on TV, including The Brit Awards and the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms.

The group has collaborated with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra; they featured in the BBC’s opening sequences for their coverage of the Tokyo Olympics, they performed a 26-date run at the Adelaide Fringe, and run regular workshops at their base in Lanarkshire, teaching others the art.

The Stage newspaper described the group as performing with ‘awesome relentless energy’ and this special celebratory evening promises to be electrifying and uplifting.
