Black History Month South (BHMS)  has announced the official launch of its 2024 celebrations with an event themed “Reclaiming Narratives,” set to take place on Monday, 23rd September 2024.

The event will  run from 11am to 2pm at St Mary’s Fire Station, 122 Brinton’s Rd, Southampton.

This year’s theme, “Reclaiming Narratives,” will explore the importance of amplifying Black voices and stories that have historically been marginalized. By celebrating the diverse contributions of Black individuals across the UK, BHMS seeks to foster greater understanding and recognition of Black history and culture.

The keynote speaker is Festus Akinbusoye, the UK’s first Black Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). Akinbusoye’s leadership and trailblazing role have been instrumental in creating positive change and representation within law enforcement and public office. His speech will provide profound insights into the importance of reclaiming and reshaping narratives within the Black community.

Acclaimed spoken word artist Aflo The Poet will grace the event with a powerful performance, sharing stories through spoken word that challenge perceptions, celebrate Black culture, and inspire action.

The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend.
