Audiences are invited to enjoy another radio-play-live-on-stage when the wartime-set The Lion and the Unicorn comes to Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 2 October.

The Lion and the Unicorn opens on the evening of 13 October 1939 – six weeks after war has been declared on Hitler’s Germany –with Winston Churchill and Neville Chamberlain – opponents for years – meeting together with their wives for a private dinner. Prime Minister Chamberlain has seen his efforts to negotiate with Hitler shattered and Churchill has been recalled to the Cabinet after ten years, his warnings of the Nazi threat vindicated.

There is no official record as to what transpired during this unique evening. This compelling new play by writer, Robin Hawdon, explores what might have happened. Described as epic and intimate, dramatic and moving, The Lion and the Unicorn strikes a chord with the modern day as it asks: how far should a person go to pacify a threatening dictator?

Performed by a cast of stars from the small screen – Brian Capron (Coronation Street), Frazer Hines (Emmerdale), Corrinne Wicks (Doctors) and Tim Hudson (Father Brown), it is presented as a radio-play-live-on-stage – meaning the set is a radio studio with the actors ready as if for a radio broadcast and sound effects created live on stage – transporting the audience to the date and location the play is set – wartime London.

The Lion and the Unicorn is brought to the stage by Crime and Comedy Theatre Company whose previous productions, which have been staged at the theatre, include The Hound of the Baskervilles, which featured radio and TV stars Terry Molloy (The Archers) and Colin Baker (Doctor Who); Eric Chappell’s comedy, Ground Rules; and Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol – also starring Baker and former Blue Peter presenter, Peter Purves.

The Lion and the Unicorn will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 2 October at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. For more information or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
