Audiences will be thrilled to learn that Black is the Color of My Voice returns to Theatre Royal Winchester on Monday 16 September – for one night only.
Black is the Color of My Voice tells the story of a successful singer and civil rights activist as she seeks redemption after the untimely death of her father, reflecting on her life from young piano prodigy destined for a life in the service of the church to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.
Inspired by the life of singer-songwriter and activist, Nina Simone – known for I Put A Spell On You, My Baby Just Cares For Me and the classic, Feeling Good – this critically acclaimed play features many of the artist’s most iconic songs performed live.
Black is the Color of My Voice is written by Apphia Campbell, whose show Woke – about two civil rights activists 42 years apart – won an Amnesty International award. It will be performed by Nicholle Cherrie, who has appeared on stage at London’s Regents Park Open Air Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe, and worked for the BBC.
It is brought to the stage by James Seabright, whose current productions include Buffy Revamped, FRIEND (The One With Gunther) and Yippee Ki Yay – a parody of Die Hard.
