Theatre fans will be swept away by The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary, which visits Theatre Royal Winchester from Tuesday 4 June.
The play tells of a bored Emma Bovary – bored with her boring doctor husband, boring provincial village and boring role as a dutiful wife in nineteenth-century France. But Emma read novels and discovers life is much more fun in them!
This refreshing and irreverent rendition features four actors who battle hilarious mishaps and misbehaving props to tell the story of Madame Bovary.
It is brought to the stage by Ha Hum Ah Productions – an award-winning theatre and film production company formed to act as a co-op company where actors, directors, writers and creatives could work together to realise their creativity, and The Minack Theatre – an open-air theatre perched on the Cornish cliffs!
The play is based on Gustave Flaubert’s complex novel, Madame Bovary, which was published in 1856, hailed as the greatest novel ever written, but put on trial for obscenity.
This production invites audiences to laugh and cry as Emma Bovary chooses the wrong husband; lose themselves in love scenes featuring a stupendous collection of handsome men; and question the impotence of women in patriarchal, Victorian society.
Vermin, visual absurdity, wild animals and a nun all feature!
The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary will be at Theatre Royal Winchester from Tuesday 04 – Wednesday 05 June at 1.30pm (Wed matinee) and 7.30pm each night. Recommended age: 12+. For more information or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
