Interesting Wallpaper had their headliner show at Heartbreakers on the 26 January. They were joined by 2 local bands, Sturmey Archers and Watching the Buzzards, for a complete Sofa City Bands Collective celebration.
A full venue filled with support for local music.
Who said we are not a city of culture?
Sturmey Archers opened the night with their cheerful, witty songs. Patrick Conners friendly charismatic performance engaged everybody from the beginning.
Watching the Buzzards confess this was their first gig, but nobody would have said it was. They have a darker and more introspective sound enveloped by Michael Davies’ outstanding voice. Michael is a familiar face in the local music scene, but this is the first time he is actually fronting a band, and it was such a pleasing surprise to listen to his voice shine.
Interesting Wallpaper came on stage bursting with energy. Their songs are fun, and their dancing vibe was certainly contagious.
The complicity between the band members was obvious and they were clearly having a great time. Pete Harvey and Leyanne Coombs created a very joyous liveliness, always supported by the incredibly efficient Charlie Brown (on drums) and Alex Parent (on bass). Pip Borthwick’s saxophone sounds bring a new fuller level to Interesting Wallpaper’s songs, and its effect when they play live is wholesome.
The event also marked the release of the Sofa City Annual magazine, which includes articles about the 3 bands performing that evening, as well as many other local musicians and artists.
Check these bands on Facebook, follow and buy their music; and you can also find more information in the Sofa City Bands Collective on their page.
The next event by the Collective is on the 29 February at The Stage Door, headlined by Pete Astor, supported by Tapes for Diane and Nick Haynes.
