January is always a slower time for live music, but there’s still plenty to do in Southampton this month. Whether you’re looking for an intimate in-store or a high-energy rock gig, there’s something for everyone to celebrate the start of 2024 in the city.

Monday 8th – Shed Seven, Vinilo Record Store

Get 2024 off to a good start with a low-key performance from Britpop band Shed Seven at Vinilo Record Store in town. They’ll be performing an acoustic set at 1pm followed by a signing to celebrate the release of their new album, A Matter of Time. The event is currently sold out, but you can sign up for notifications if more tickets become available on the Vinilo website.

Saturday 13th – Spanish Love Songs, Engine Rooms

Looking for something a bit rowdier? Spanish Love Songs will be appearing at Southampton’s Engine Rooms on the 13th. Their last album No Joy saw the band move in a more positive, upbeat direction with more pop-rock elements that’s sure to make for a night of rock anthems and, despite the album title, plenty of joy.

Sunday 14th – Folly Group, Vinilo Record Store

There’s been a lot of buzz around London’s Folly Group, and their intimate in-store at Vinilo is a great chance to get in on the ground floor before they take off. Taking inspiration from genres ranging from post-punk to Afro-Cuban rhythms, Folly Group are the next big thing in the UK’s experimental rock scene.

Sunday 21st – South of Salem, Vinilo Record Store

Vinilo are really treating us this month, with hard-rock band South of Salem also coming down for an acoustic instore session in January, plus a signing. It’s always fun to see heavier bands take on the acoustic in-store setting, so head along to see their upcoming album Death of the Party in a different light.

Monday 22nd – Jamie Webster, Vinilo Record Store

Folk-rock troubadour sensation Jamie Webster will be celebrating the release of his third album, 10 For The People with a record store tour of the UK, hitting Southampton on the 22nd. Act fast if you want to get down to this one – the evening show sold out quickly, but they’ve just added an afternoon set for anyone who missed out.

Wednesday 24th – Bat Sabbath, The Joiners

Looking for something a bit more rogue? Canadian metal legends Cancer Bats will be performing as their cover-band alter ego Bat Sabbath at the Joiners at the end of the month. The words “carnage” and “beer-soaked orgies of destruction” have been thrown around, so it’s guaranteed to be a wild one.

Saturday 27th – Southampton Record Fair, The 1865

As always, you can find the Southampton Record Fair at the 1865 on the last Saturday of the month, when the venue becomes a paradise of vinyl and CDs. There’s no telling what gems you’ll find there, having added classic albums and underrated new releases to my collection after a morning browse there. And it’s just around the corner from Vinilo, Vinilo Vintage and Oxfam Music and Books if you want to make a day of it.
