Given that we’re entering the final stretch of November, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Christmas themed events would be dominating the ’what’s on’ proceedings. Well, you’d be quite mistaken.
This week, a more high-brow cultural experience takes centre stage with the Welsh National Opera at the Mayflower. It all kicks off with a one night only production of Ainadamar (pictured) on Wednesday, followed by a lavish rendition of La Traviata on Friday and Saturday. For younger opera lovers in need of a distraction from Christmas list rewrites, there’s also a Saturday matinee of Play Opera Live, billed as a ‘space spectacular.’
Away from theatreland, you’ll find a very special Save The Platform night at The Brook. Local acts will come together on Thursday to help raise the necessary funds to reopen The Platform Tavern, which was recently badly damaged in a fire. On 25 November The Slack 5, Pegasuses, and Daddy Witch all play the Design Chapel in another fundraiser for the venue.
Staying on the subject of music, there’s a famous face at The Engine Rooms on Friday night. Gok Wan is best known for TV shows such as How to Look Good Naked, but it’s your dancing that will be under the microscope as Gok mans the decks.
For those eager to get into the swing of all things festive asap, the Christmas market and fair in Southampton city centre is well underway. If you fancy a German sausage, a mulled wine and a toasted marshmallow, followed by ice skating, a spin on a carousel and being fired skywards in the sling shot ride in Guildhall Square, all bases are covered.
