The sound of fireworks are probably still ringing in your ears. Hell, you may even have yet to put away the Halloween decorations. If you are planning on a gentle drift into the festive season, look away now. This is the week that things get real in the build up to Christmas with the big light switch-on on Thursday marking the opening of the Southampton Christmas Market. The honour of flicking this year’s switch goes to none other than Christopher Biggins and you’ll find street shows and live performances to get you in the Christmas spirit.
If you’re not quite ready to embrace the festive season, there are plenty of other events taking place around the city this week.
There’s a big gig this week at The Joiners with electro-blues from Funke and the Two Tone Baby on Friday.
You’ll find UK bass and jazz fusion in the shape of the Dutty Moonshine Big Band at the 1865. If dub is more your thing, don’t miss the Gentleman’s Dub Club at the Engine Rooms – both on Thursday.
The Mayflower boasts one-off shows from two heavy-hitters; acerbic comedy from Frankie Boyle on Saturday night, followed by Jools Holland and His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra on Sunday.
And if the prospect of early Christmas festivities make you want to hide away in a darkened room, Southampton Film Week is well underway with screenings at various locations across the city.
