Hampshire artist Cat Askew’s showcases art made from found objects in her exhibition, Stroppy Objects: Belongings with Opinions, showing at Winchester School of Art Library until September 29.
The exhibition is formed of a series of artworks made from found objects, which can be seen as extensions of “Readymades”. All of them use text in the design to humorously express Cat’s frustration with various subjects in the format of fake beauty products or embroidered clothing. Cat’s work is critical of our social media, the value of women to be beautiful over other qualities, and work culture, capitalism and the nine-to-five lifestyle.
Cat Askew is a multi-disciplinary artist from Portsmouth, and works at the University of Southampton libraries. Humour and wordplay characterise her chosen subject matter which has ranged from anti-capitalism to the perils of dating.
Cat studied Fine Art & Art History at Plymouth University, graduating in 2017. She has managed two self-organised exhibitions and her work has been seen in group shows in Portsmouth, Southampton and London. This is her first solo exhibition.
