Hampshire resident and quadruple amputee, Alex Lewis, overcomes adversity to climb Ethiopia’s highest mountain in the award-winning documentary film, Alex Lewis: Mountain, which will be screened at Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 12 September.
The film follows Alex, from Stockbridge, six years after he lost his arms and legs to septicaemias he sets out to prove that anything is possible – by climbing the mountain with an off-road, solar-powered mobility hand cycle.
Alex Lewis: Mountain takes audiences from the A&E department to the design and tech labs of the University of Southampton to the spectacular scenery of the Ethiopian Highlands for Alex’s 14-day expedition of the country’s tallest mountain, Ras Dashen, at 4,550m tall.
Alex’s story has become well-known across the region since it was first documented on the news in 2013 when he required life-saving surgery.
Since then he has learnt to walk, had facial reconstruction, jumped 15,000ft out of an aeroplane, founded The Alex Lewis Trust, which provides children with revolutionary prosthetics, and become a public speaker.
The film was directed by the acclaimed and award-winning director, Simon Ratigan, who has worked with everyone from British Gas to Lurpak, the NHS, Save the Children and Amazon Prime. The film won Best Documentary at the London Independent Film Awards 2023 and was selected to be shown at the 2023 Beverly Hills Film Festival.
After the screening there will be a post-show chat with Alex and David Collinson, who joined Alex on this intrepid challenge and produced the film.
This is a Pick Your Price show meaning audiences can select a ticket price that works best for them, making a range of shows accessible. Ticket options start from £5.
All proceeds go to Play to the Crowd, the arts and education charity that runs Theatre Royal Winchester, Hat Fair Outdoor Arts festival and Playmakers, to support live performance and creative learning and engagement opportunities in Winchester and the surrounding areas.
