This Sunday there’s a great opportunity to learn about Southampton’s vibrant migrant history.
The tour, which takes place on, September 3rd, will be led by Tony Kushner, who teaches and researches in the Parkes Institute and the History Department of the University of Southampton. He has written widely on migration, racism, heritage and belonging. The tour is based on Professor Kushner’s book ‘Southampton’s Migrant Past and Present’, copies of which will be available to purchase at the tour, sold by October Books – the tour is a collaboration between the Parkes Institute and October Books.
Entitled Migrant Southampton: Past and Present, the walk will cover many different migrant histories from the medieval through to post-Second World War. Well known buildings will be reinterpreted through the lens of migration and many hidden sites will be uncovered. Taken together they will show that Southampton is a city built on migration and that its prosperity and culture have depended and been shaped by newcomers and their descendants.
This free tour begins at 2pm from the Duke of Wellington Pub, 36 Bugle Street, Southampton, SO14 2AH. The tour lasts approximately 2 hours, ending at the Grapes at 4pm. The walking tour is accessible but there are uneven pavements for part of it.
There will be an optional buffet reception following the tour at God’s House Tower. A member of October Books will be on the tour and have a stall at God’s House Tower selling Tony’s book ‘Southampton’s Migrant Past and Present’ where you can read about the City’s migrant history in more detail. The walking tour is free but a ticket should be booked here.
