Applause review: Broadway’s Jukebox Musicals, Freemantle & Shirley Amateur Theatrical Society

by amateur dramatics editor Martin Brisland.

Singing is a great way to lift your spirits and that is just what Freemantle and Shirley Amateur Theatrical Society (FASATS) provided for an enthusiastic audience on a hot Friday summer night at Freemantle Community Centre (16/6/23).

The ‘jukebox musical’ has become a popular format in recent times. Shows such as Buddy, Beautiful, Jersey Boys, Mama Mia,  Rock of Ages, Smokey Joe’s Cafe and We Will Rock You all tell the story of a famous musician, group or songwriters, while incorporating hit songs throughout their career.

In fact this performance used 32 songs taken from 16 jukebox musicals. They ranged from Roar by Katy Perry to Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters to You Should be Dancing by the Bee Gees and Rule the World by Take That. I was singing along all evening.

Particular standout performances were delivered for the Neil Diamond song Beautiful Noise, Chantilly Lace by The Big Bopper and Material Girl by Madonna. There were also strong renditions of Neil Diamond’s I Am I Said and Natural Woman recorded by Aretha Franklin.

The whole ensemble of 15 singers joined together for the finale of two classic Queen numbers ‘You’re My Best Friend’ and ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’. A special mention for Vicki Ashton who pulled the whole show together with months of weekly rehearsals, operated the sound desk and conducted the performers. She even made an impromptu singing appearance on stage during one number!

FASATS always make a charitable donation and some of the proceeds from this show will go to support the work of the Silverlining Brain Injury charity.

Unfortunately, the performance scheduled for Saturday 17th June has had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

They will be back at Freemantle Community Centre with their annual pantomime in January 2024 so check their website for details.

FASATS embody the true spirit of amateur dramatics with local people performing for their local community. They deserve your support.
