You know the true spirit of local am dram is alive and kicking when the butt of jokes in a panto at Freemantle Community Centre is Millbrook and Totton!
Fremantle and Shirley Amateur Theatrical Society (FASATS) have the honour of being the first show to be reviewed in Applause! the new amateur dramatic section of In Common. The panto was based on The Wizard of Oz and what a fun filled show it was.
Written and directed by Paul Warwick it is a sequel to the Wizard of Freemantle the society performed back in 2008.
All the standard elements of panto were woven into the script, good versus evil, pantomime dames, audience participation, a happy ending and in this play Toto the dog and a talking chicken.
The costumes were particularly splendid and the selection of cheesy gags made the enthusiastic audience groan and laugh.
The choice of songs was inspired. They were from a wide range of sources, even Les Miserables, and the ensemble carried them off brilliantly. The best was saved for last with the audience joining in with the timeless classic Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
All the large cast of 24 deserve praise with particularly strong performances from Kim Warwick, Shirley Claringbould, Barrie Tilley, Clive Ashton, and Jane Amiet.
Last year FASATS raised over £1,100 for charity. Their 2023 appeal is for the Silverlining charity. It helps those who have suffered brain injuries, their friends and family members.More details at www.thesilverlining.org.uk
