Singin’ in the Rain will take you on a journey back to the glamour of Hollywood during the roaring 20s, when it comes to the Mayflower Theatre from 14 to 18 June.
Silent movie star, Don Lockwood, has it all, a string of hit films and a studio-engineered romance with the most beautiful actress in town. What Don doesn’t know is that the silver screen is about to find its voice, and a chance meeting with a talented young chorus girl set to steal his heart promises to change both Don, and Hollywood, forever.
Andrew Wright’s high-energy choreography and Simon Higlett’s sumptuous set design, including over 14,000 litres of water on stage every night, combine with the charm, romance and wit of one of the world’s best- loved movies.
The stage production, based on the classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film of the same name and regularly voted the most popular film musical of all time, features the glorious score, including Good Morning, Make ‘em Laugh, Moses Supposes, and, of course, the legendary Singin’ in the Rain.
Sam Lips, Charlotte Gooch and Jenny Gayner star alongside Strictly Come Dancing’s Kevin Clifton (as Cosmo Brown) in Jonathan Church’s critically acclaimed production.
“It’s such a wholesome, feel-good show and it’s a classic,” explains Kevin. “Then in terms of spectacle… it actually rains on stage.
“The first time I saw it I was blown away by it because I couldn’t imagine how they’d do that in a theatre. Now as a performer in the show, when we’re dancing in the rain and in the puddles on stage it’s pretty magical.”
Tickets for Singin’ in the Rain (14 to 18 June) are on sale at mayflower.org.uk or 02380 711811.
