With International Women’s Day taking place on Sunday, March 8, a number of special events are taking place across Southampton. These include a Phenomenal Women event being held on Sunday at the Studio Theatre at NST Southampton. The event will feature a number of inspirational speakers: Sylvia Mac, a child burn survivor, campaigner and founder of LOVE DISFIGURE, Instagram influencer Morgan Hayley, Mia Violet, a writer and bisexual trans woman, who uses her platform to discuss queer issues and mental health body positivity campaigner Fatima Timbo. Also taking part will be singing teacher and 1940s entertainer Becki Short, who will be running a ‘singing for confidence’ workshop, and Kim Furnish, who will guide visitors through laughter yoga sessions. The event is a fundraiser for VieNess Discover You Love You CIC, allowing the organisation to run more workshops in schools and education groups. Other events taking place across the weekend include a talk on ‘women artists in the collection’ at Southampton City Art Gallery on Saturday at 2pm, for information, visit www.southamptoncityartgallery.com. Elsewhere, ‘The Woman Who Would Be Mayor’ at Sea City Museum on Sunday from 11am, features an acted tour devised and performed by Southampton-based actor and historian Jane Glennie, who will take on the role of Mrs Lucia Foster Welch, Southampton’s first female mayor, as she guides visitors through the Southampton Stories exhibition. On Sunday, there will be a free hour long walk on Southampton Common to mark International Women’s Day, led by Sustrans Volunteer Walk leaders, in association with Southampton Women’s Forum. On Monday evening there will be a Women in Games Ambassador Networking Event at Network Eagle Lab on Portland Terrace, aimed at game designers, developers, creatives, students etc. The event will feature a panel and networking opportunities. For more information, click here
