Now in its 15th year, Southampton Seed Swap takes place on Sunday, March 1. But what’s it all about? Do you have to have seeds to trade, and what is the purpose of it?
Southampton Seed Swap is a community seed swapping, gardening and environmental living event, aimed at helping to build up, nurture and preserve Southampton’s food diversity. Inspired by Seedy Sunday in Brighton, its aim is also to bring people together with the goal of exchanging knowledge, tips, and of course, seeds, whether you be a seasoned gardener or are simply growing-curious; at the start of your gardening journey.
Organiser Ziggy Woodward explains more: “If you have saved or surplus seeds – great! Bring them along and swap them, packet for packet. If not, there will be seeds available for a small donation – ie 30p per packet or 4 for £1.
“We will be including seeds from the wonderful Heritage Seed Library https://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/hsl. Funds raised from the ‘sale’ of seeds will be sent to the Heritage Seed Library to help with their valuable work, preserving, conserving, adopting & growing rare & heirloom varieties of veg seed.”
In addition there will also be stall holders, including local guerrilla gardening group Rebel Gardeners, and Yvonne’s Plants, selling seed bombs, plants and related items.
The event will be held upstairs in the Grove & Gallery of The Art House from 12pm – 4pm. Entry fee is £2 suggested donation. The Art House is currently having a major fundraiser and donations will go towards this.
